Several individuals think SUVs are cars because of the four wheels and 4-Door configuration. But, I consider them trucks because they have a specific chassis and other features which make them trucks.
Are SUVs Considered Cars or Trucks? SUVs are considered trucks because of the truck chassis, identical high-performance engines, overall dimensions, specific cargo, and spacious passenger cabins.
You cannot consider the standard three-row, 4-door SUVs as cars because both have different dimensions. Moreover, they are popular and have efficient engines and heavyweight frames like pickups.
Why are SUVs considered trucks?
I have explained several characteristics of the SUVs that are identical to the pickup trucks with minor modifications.
Chassis of a truck
These vehicles are considered pickups because the manufacturing companies build them in their chassis. They have a pickup chassis because of the stock designs and specifications.
In addition, their layout and designs are body-on-frame. They have a platform to support the engine and other mechanical components like the pickups.
They are beneficial for off-road driving conditions because of these body-on-frame layouts. Furthermore, their platforms have similarities with the trucks.
SUVs have enclosed cabins with spacious seats and better accommodation space. Also, they have tailgates or cargo doors like the counter vehicles.
The chassis contains steel and metallic frames that have standard lifespans. The SUVs have durable body-on-frame chassis with off-road properties.
Both have resistant forces against collisions because of the body-on-frame. As a result, the collision force cannot put additional pressure on their frames.
Identical high-performance engines
SUVs have high-performance and efficient engines like trucks. Therefore, people consider SUVs like trucks because of their efficient and durable engines.
These engines produce more horsepower to withstand the weight of the frame. The SUVs are pickup trucks because they have inline and straight engines.
Their engines have straight and vertical cylinders. Also, they are beneficial and produce significant horsepower.
Both vehicles have upright cylinders of the engines, which comprise a side-by-side configuration. They have V-shaped engines and fit at an angle of 60 degrees.
Moreover, they have high-performance engines like pickups because they withstand the heavy weight of the chassis. These engines can stabilize the cargo weight and provide horsepower for speed.
These engines provide off-road driving stability like pickups. The SUVs and their tires remain stable on uneven roads.
Furthermore, you can drive them at different speeds on rough and uneven terrains because they have maximum momentum.
Their improved stability reduces their accidents, and the frames, tires, and suspension last for thousands of miles without significant dents and damages.
Overall dimensions
The SUVs are small, mid-size, and large according to their dimensions. However, large sizes SUVs have identical dimensions to trucks.
They have minor differences in width and length. Therefore, you can consider these large-sized SUVs as trucks.
They are large and have identical dimensions to trucks because of their similar platforms. However, they have a length of about 18 feet (216 inches).
Their width is about 6.15 feet (73.8 inches), and their height is nearly 6.25 feet (75 inches) according to the manufacturing standards.
The average pickup has a length of about 19.8 feet and is around 6.7 feet wide. Their height is about 6.3 feet because of their overall dimensions and layouts.
The sizes of the large-sized SUVs vary and become identical to pickups. Therefore, they are considered trucks because of the minor dimensional differences.
Called Lightweight trucks
They are lightweight pickups because they have lower weight limits. Moreover, they are part of the lightweight truck category because of the platform and other specifications.
They have an average weight of about 2000 to 6000 pounds (907 to 2721 kg). Their mid-size models weigh around 5000 pounds (2267 kg).
Also, they are comfortable and off-road variants with several advanced specifications. The weight of a standard pickup can weigh up to 7000 pounds (3175 kg).
It varies according to the overall length and width. The size and category of the SUV determine its size.
The SUVs are slightly lightweight according to the dimensions and specifications. Therefore, you can consider them pickups because many people call them lightweight trucks in the United States of America.
Specific cargo
Many people consider these vehicles as trucks because they have specific cargo for the luggage. However, the cargo compartment of the SUVs is different than the trucks.
Their cargos have covering to protect the luggage from environmental factors. Moreover, they have a door and protect the luggage from stealing.
These cargos are separate and on the rear side as trucks. However, the trucks have open and long beds on the rear side.
These are the cargos for the luggage and other such things. Several people consider these as trucks because of their identical cargo properties.
Also, they have identical comfortable seating with the cargo as trucks and have a driving cabin, passenger seats, and a long bed on the rear side.
Spacious passenger cabin
The SUVs have spacious cabins like trucks with specific seating arrangements. Therefore, they are like pickups because they have spacious cabins and seats for adults and children.
However, a few SUVs have a three-row seat arrangement for the passengers. Two rows are on the front side, and the third is in the rear.
The third-row seats have folding properties, and you can make more cargo space. However, the pickup trucks have two-row seat settings because of their layout and manufacturing standards.
But, their cabins are spacious with two-row seat arrangements. These spacious cabins make them identical to the SUV.
Therefore, many people consider their trucks because the cabin has similar designs and identical space for the accommodation of passengers.
The three-row cabin of the SUVs is more spacious. Therefore, they provide accommodation space for more adults and children inside the cabin.
A Chart of Differences Between SUVs and Trucks
Features | SUV | Truck |
Wheelbase | Short | Long |
Doors | Four-door setting and Five-door | Two door configurations |
Cargo | Covered with door | Not covered and long bed |
Number of seat rows | Three-row | Two row |
Chassis | Truck based | Body-on-frame |
Weight | Lightweight | Heavyweight |
Center of gravity | Low | High |
Which SUVs are built on a car platform?
The manufacturing companies of SUVs manufacture them on the platform of cars. These are called crossover SUVs because of their layout and standard platform. Also, these platforms are different from the truck chassis.
Therefore, you cannot consider the crossover SUVs as trucks. They have unibody chassis because of the overall build and specifications.
In addition, they have similar designs to standard SUVs, but the platform is different. They have four-door configurations because of their standard design.
Also, they have a two-box layout with a separate passenger cabin and rear cargo section. Their rear seats are foldable because of their advanced layout.
In such circumstances, you can fold them and make more cargo space. However, crossover SUVs are lightweight because of their car-like platform.
They have the build on the chassis of cars, and their manufacturing companies avoid the heavyweight truck platform. Moreover, their exterior and interior are identical to the standard cars.
The Hyundai Tucson and Hyundai Palisade are examples of these crossover SUVs. Also, the latest Kia Telluride has the platform of a car and is lightweight because of its build and specifications.
However, they are more compact than the standard SUVs. Their handling is less challenging on uneven roads.
They have small engines, but they have higher efficiency. The engines can generate high horsepower and boost the speed level.
Also, their engines have reduced fuel consumption which increases the fuel economy. They are lightweight and have minimum stability for off-road driving conditions.
Their tires lose traction on uneven roads, which results in sudden slippage. Moreover, these crashes are dangerous and lead to frame damage.
