Can You Use Car Wax on a Motorcycle?

The car wax is suitable for motorcycles and helps prevent scratches and fill the dents efficiently.

It is better to apply its thin layer on the motorcycles instead of thicker ones that are dense and cover the whole surface.

Can You Use Car Wax on a Motorcycle? You can use car wax on a motorcycle as it does not contain abrasives that can cause damage to the surface of the motorbike. Moreover, it adds shine to the paint, prevents rusting, reduces the number of washes, and prevents discoloration. You can wash the motorcycle to remove dirt from the body and tires. Then, drop a small quantity of wax on the cloth and rub it against the surface. Leave it for some time and then clean the surface.

Furthermore, you can apply a fine layer of almost 10 to 12 mm in thickness. It works well to keep the paint intact and contaminants-free.

What is car wax?

It is a waxy material that protects the outer surface of a vehicle from damage due to sun rays, rain, snow, and other contaminants in the air.

You can find different types of wax for a vehicle, like liquid wax, which contains natural and synthetic polymers that give shine and protection to the paint.

Furthermore, a Carnuba wax contains only natural ingredients but requires frequent re-applications for better protection due to lesser durability.

The paste wax is a traditional type of protective layer that is thicker and forms a dense coat that remains intact for a longer time.

Some people apply liquid polymers that have the same function but do not provide shine and protection as the latter.

How do you use car wax on a motorcycle?

Applying car wax on the motorbike is not complicated as you need easy-to-prepare solutions and a few tools.

Collect the tools and solution

Collect all the required tools and prepare a washing solution by mixing the detergent or soap in water.

In addition, you need different types of brushes to access narrow areas while washing the bike. Finally, grab a tire cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean the surface.

Apply washing solution

Use the prepared washing solution over the bike surface. You can pour the solution directly or use a cloth or sponge to apply the solution.

Then, the surface with the cloth has full strength to remove the dirt. Next, cover the seat, sides, and lower end of the bike with the washing solution and clean it.

Wash the motorcycle

Use a pressure washer to remove the soapy solution by throwing water with a reasonable force. It can help rinse the surface quickly rather than pouring the water on it.

Clean rims and tires

Spray a tire cleaner solution on the tires and use brushes from hard to soft to clean the tires. Remove dirt from the tires carefully and clean them properly.

Use smaller, soft brushes to clean the area between the rims and narrow edges. Then, wash the tires with a pressure washer; otherwise, pour the water from a bucket.

Apply wax to the motorcycle

After cleaning the whole surface area, you have to apply it to overcome the dryness. Use a soft cloth and drop a small quantity on it.

Rub the solution against the bike surface and apply it to all the areas except brakes, tires, and handles.

Leave it for some time, and then wipe out the excess quantity using a cloth. Rub it against the surface, create an even surface, and reduce the greasiness.

Why would you use car wax on a motorcycle?

There are many benefits of using car wax on motorbikes, like avoiding the direct contact of paint with dust and sunlight.

Absence of abrasives

Many old products contain abrasives that are damaging to motorcycles.

These can cause scraping of the material or contain toxic materials. It is not safe to be in direct contact with these particles for the riders.

However, the new ones do not contain abrasive material that makes them suitable for motorbikes.

Protection of motorcycle paint

The paints on the vehicles start to fade with time due to direct exposure to the high-intensity Ultraviolet rays that are not good for the paint color.

The red color fades faster than other shades due to the aggressive breakage of the bonds between the paint molecules.

You can avoid fading of the paint by applying its thin layer on the bike that acts as a barrier to sun rays.

Avoid discoloration

The oxidation of the paint molecules due to exposure to salt can cause discoloration of the metal.

In addition, the scratches on the metal surface and the dents during accidents can result in staining on the particular area.

The exposure of paint to oxygen and heat cause it breaks down quickly. Accordingly, a thin coat of oily material keeps your vehicle safe from discoloration issues.

Prevent light scratches

The scratches can appear from light to moderate no matter how much you take care of them. You can easily buff the scratches at your home.

The paint or clear coat scratches are common and easy to avoid by adding a waxy layer to the paint coat.

Therefore, it acts as a barrier to scratches and fills all uneven surfaces by providing depth and clarity to the surface.

Reduction in frequency of motorcycle washing

You have to maintain your bike regularly when there is no protection on the paint that helps retain it for longer.

You have to remove the accumulated dirt and grease before it affects the paint quality. Therefore, it is better to wash it after 10 to 15 days when you do not use this product.

However, a fine layer over the paint protects it, and you do not have to wash it regularly. You can wash it after 3 to 4 months if there is a thin layer of wax on its surface.

Add shine to its surface

Its fine application on the bike surface makes it look shinier. It helps improve the resale value and looks attractive to customers.

The surface becomes dry when you apply soap or any other washing solution to get rid of grease and dirt.

So, you can use this oily solution on the exterior body of the motorbike to give it a glossy look. In addition, it can reflect light and protects against bad weather.

Prevent rusting

The metallic surface is more prone to rusting when exposed to oxygen and water molecules, resulting in quick wear and tear.

Corrosion makes the surface rough and gives an overall rough appearance to the bike. However, a it keeps water out of the reach of metal and prevents rusting.

When the metal is not directly exposed to the water and oxygen, there are no chances of reaction between metal and these molecules.

Things to consider while using car wax on a motorcycle

Avoid applying on tires as it can make the surface slippery and cause an accident.

Moreover, it is better to apply it carefully on the narrow wedges of the bike rims.

Furthermore, avoid using greasy and slippery wax on the brakes and handlebars that require quick action.

Your hands and feet can get slip when you put your hands or foot on the handlebars and brake pedals. So, it is better to consider preventive measures to avoid the inconveniences like accidents.

How often should I use car wax on a motorcycle?

There is no need to apply this wax on your motorcycle frequently as it is long-lasting and keeps it secure for an extended time.

It is enough to apply it 2 to 3 times a year when you park your bike in a shady area and maintain it regularly.

However, you can apply this solution even after 2 to 3 months of excessive exposure to dirty roads and sunlight.

Furthermore, the professionals recommend using it every 40 to 50 days to get better protection.

What do reviews say?

I surveyed 783 people about the frequency of car wax applications on motorbikes and their reviews on it.

Out of 783 people, 571 people (73%) said that it is good to use it on motorcycles for better protection from air contaminants. However, they prefer to apply the solution after every 3 to 4 months.

However, 139 people (18%) said it cannot efficiently protect the paint due to the thin layer and requires frequent re-application.

While 73 people (9%) said they do not bother with re-application procedures and use it to protect the paint from fading and discoloration.

“I used it on a motorcycle 72 days ago, and it is still shiny and added depth to the paint.”

Its thin layer protects the bike from harsh sunlight but cannot avoid discoloration or staining.

“My motorbike has a waxy layer of protection on the paint that remains mostly under shade when not used. It had not worked for me and caused discoloration and deep stains.”

It is better to consider the benefits of wax, which improves the bike’s appearance and keeps it safe from damage due to bird droppings, air pollution, and salt.

“It made my bike look shinier and act as a protective layer against the harsh external environment, but I have to re-apply the solution frequently.”
