Motorcycle Only Runs In Reverse

Generally, motorcycles do not comprise reverse gear according to their standard designs. However, a few models are heavyweight and run backward to cause sudden slippage and accidents.

Sometimes, the motorcycle only runs in reverse due to variable ignition time, different camshaft performance, plugged-up fuel line screens, and variable petcock settings. 

A few touring motorbikes come with reverse gear. But, a back-running engine can cause significant problems.

Why does a motorcycle only run in reverse?

Reversing a motorcycle require manual foot control and effort. Sometimes, they run in reverse due to the following reasons. 

Variable ignition time

Motorcycle engines have combustion cylinders that produce a specific spark for ignition. Moreover, these engines comprise spark plugs of different designs and variable performance. 

In such conditions, the 2-stroke engine runs backward when the ignition timing varies. The built-in pistons control and regulate the ignition time. 

They provide power for strokes and proper ignition. However, modern models have advanced engines. They have computer-based regulation, and ECU (Electronic control unit) regulates the ignition. 

Internal electrical failures can affect ECU. It cannot regulate the pistons, and they change the ignition timing. The sparks and power move backward, which results in the engine reverse running. 

The ECU cannot control and regulate the map for particular engine rotations and stabilized performance. In such circumstances, the ignition system malfunctions, and you cannot prevent the motorbike from going in the backward direction.

Different camshaft performance

A four-stroke combustion engine is one of the most significant in motorcycles. However, it comprises four strokes and controls the cylinders and pistons. 

The four-stroke engine causes cylinder strokes and stabilizes piston efficiency for fuel combustions. Similarly, the camshafts control the event timing of the engine. 

The crankshaft performance changes, and the camshafts move backward. Also, their performance reverses when the crankshaft loses its stability. 

In such circumstances, the camshafts cannot perform at their standard efficiency level. As a result, the exhaust system and intake malfunctions. 

The camshafts cannot maintain the event time of the exhaust system.

In such conditions, you cannot control the motorcycle. Therefore, it runs backward, which can cause rolling and accidents. 

The built-in engine loses its efficiency and performance. It cannot stabilize its weight, and it moves backward. 

Plugged-up fuel line screens

The motorcycle engine and fuel system have screen filters. They have different fuel flow ratings and remove contaminants. 

They are small and have more versatile performance than regular filters. However, you can find them on the Petcock tube. 

Dirt particles and debris can clog these screen filters. As a result, their fuel flow reduces and stops. 

The plugged-up fuel line screens can stop the fuel flow inside the motorbike engine. Their clogging can cause reverse fuel flow. 

It affects the engine performance of a standard motorbike. Blockage of the Petcock can reverse the fuel flow. 

Furthermore, the obstructed petcock and screens cannot withstand the fuel pressure. They apply more pressure on the fuel and change its direction backward. 

The blockage of reverse tubes can run it in opposite directions, which is dangerous and causes accidents.

The fuel lines disconnect from their connection points and undergo damage. The internal suction increases, and fuel flows toward the carburetor. 

The vacuum pressure decrease and modifies when the fuel leaks increase.

Variable Petcock setting

You can find a petcock on the lower side of the motorcycle fuel tank. Petcock has a dial shape and comprises three different settings. 

You can turn it off, ON and regulate it in reverse. Turning it on can stabilize the performance of the fuel line, which is about 1.5 to 2 inches above the built-in tank. 

It can regulate all other fuel lines that connect to reverse settings. You can stop the fuel flow by turning off the petcock of the container. 

Sometimes, the fuel level reduces from the standard level. In such circumstances, the motorcycle undergoes sputtering, which is dangerous. 

It can lead to dangerous accidental conditions and collisions. Therefore, you can adjust the Petcock settings to reverse, which can run the motorcycle smoothly at a particular speed.

It leads to motorcycles moving backward, which results in accidents, slippage, and injuries.

Is it dangerous to run a motorcycle only in reverse?

The vacuum pull reduces when the engine does not spin at particular rotations per minute (RPMs). Sometimes, the vacuum system malfunctions, and fuel flow changes. 

The barrier breaks between the carburetor and the vacuum. In such circumstances, the motorcycle reverses and slips. 

The ignition time changes when the pistons cannot regulate the cylinders. The combustions vary, and it moves backward. 

A few are heavy and roll back, which can lead to sudden collisions. Overflow of fuel to the carburetor can damage its efficiency, and combustion cylinders and exhaust system malfunctions. 

How to fix a motorcycle which only runs in reverse?

You can fix the reverse running of your motorcycle by stabilizing the ignition time. Regulating the pistons and camshafts can stabilize the fuel flow. 

Also, you can stabilize the performance of the crankshaft that regulates the camshaft. In such circumstances, the camshaft performance improves, and event timing stabilizes. 

You can check the fuel lines and screens. Removing the clogging from the screens and replacing them can fix the problem. 

Also, you can clean the petcock and remove the accumulated debris from the tubes. Removal of clogging from the plugged-up screens instantly removes this defect from the motorcycle engine. 

Avoiding the modified strokes in the 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines can fix the defect. Replacing the screens/filters is essential for fixing it. 

Their replacement can reduce the back pressure of the fuel and stabilize the Petcock efficiency. Changing the Petcock settings is effective for solving the problem. 

You can regulate its settings and fix them at their standard performance level. Furthermore, regulating the internal vacuum pressure is beneficial. 

You can reduce the fuel flow to the carburetor by stabilizing the suction of the built-in vacuum system. Also, preventing fuel leakages is essential to avoid the backward movement of a motorcycle. 

You can check the connection of fuel lines and fix them in their connection spots to avoid leaks. In addition, checking the petcock’s performance is essential.

Its damages are dangerous and alter the fuel flow. Furthermore, a malfunctioning petcock can affect the carburetor’s efficiency.

Its replacement can fix the issue instantly. The stability of fuel lines regulates the proper fuel flow.
